Common Council has given first and second readings to a Zoning By-Law amendment that is needed for the proposed apartment complex at the foot of Sydney Street across from Tin Can Beach.
Parsi Development Ltd wants to build the 185 unit building known as The Landmark at 300 Sydney Street. Representatives of the company told a public hearing at Common Council tonight they have received over 160 inquiries about rentals since launching the development’s web site last month. Once the rezoning receives final approval – the developers say they would move to finalizing plans and financing with an expected start of construction next year.
Two objections were heard – one came by email from a nearby resident worried about the impact on traffic while the owner of a nearby commercial complex suggested the size of the building didn’t fit with the intent of the PlanSJ municipal plan vision. He was also worried about the impact of construction vehicles and parking issues on his two tenants. City staff say parking won’t be an issue – there is plenty of space behind the building’s foot print as well as an used parking lot across the street.
Third and final reading for the zoning amendment is expected to be approved at the next council meeting.
