Emergency crews on scene of ruptured gas line on Broad Street (City of Saint John image)

(UPDATE – 2) All residents have been allowed to return to their homes and the demolition site has been cleared to continue work. The street is re-opened and fire fighters are clearing the scene.

(UPDATE – 1) Liberty Utilities workers have secured the ruptured gas line and crews are checking homes in the area for any traces of natural gas. As the homes are given the “all clear” – residents are being allowed to return.

Liberty Utilities crews are working to shut off and secure a gas line near 149 Broad Street. Fire and police have closed off a section of the street – and – nearby residents have been evacuated as a precaution.

Fire crews are in the process of taking readings in nearby homes to ensure no natural gas is detected before residents are allowed to return.

The incident happened near a former special care home that is being demolished.
