The city of Edmundston and communities in the upper Madawaska region are going to the RED Level as of 6 tonight thanks to a significant outbreak of the U-K variant. The variant is more contagious than the original virus – and – that has led to the number of cases in the region doubling then doubling again in the past two weeks. Ten cases were confirmed yesterday and there are 24 new cases in the region today.

Russell says the RED Level will be in place a minimum of four days. She says the restrictions may be extended and may be expanded to other communities in that region. Russell says they have confirmed community spread in connection with some of the cases.

Meantime – mass clinics are being held today and tomorrow in Edmundston for people not displaying any symptoms of COVID.
