The provincial Environment Department confirms it is reviewing what it terms “an incident” at the American Iron and Metal operation on the port’s west side Saturday afternoon. It involves another explosion in the shredder unit that shook windows in the area and across the harbour.
In an email response to questions from newsysj.ca – department spokesperson Vicky Lutes says as part of the review “the department has visited the site to ensure that the appropriate inspection program for material was undertaken prior to being shredded.”
Lutes also confirms the impulse noise “from an explosion in the shredder was 105.6dBA which is above the 104dBA level that requires a shut down of the operation. She says AIM followed the require process “with immediate notification to the department and the Saint John Fire Department.” Fire department officials did a visual inspection of the shredder unit and indicated they don’t have any concerns.
Lutes says the company resumed operations this morning.
