Common Council has given the Mayor approval to send a letter to the federal and provincial governments asking for a progress report on a request dealing with racial discrimination. Council passed a motion last July requesting racial discrimination be made a criminal offense.

Last year’s request followed a large Black Lives Matter rally in King’s Square followed by a march down King Street to City Hall. In September – Council received and filed a report from the City Solicitor exploring the legislative authorities and options for the city to act.

Council also approved a request from the Mayor to join the UNESCO Coalition of Municipalities Against Racism and Discrimination. It follows a similar move two weeks ago when Council supported a movement call for the eradication of nuclear weapons.
