A proposed By-Law banning single use of plastic shopping bags goes before Common Council Monday night.
Council directed staff to draft the By-Law after receiving a request from the Fundy Regional Services Commission. The Commission estimates that 35,000,000 of the bags are used in the Fundy region each year. The Commission says the market for recycled plastic bags “has evaporated” and the bags are now ending up in the landfill.
If approved – the By-Law would become effective July 01st. The proposed document is based on similar by-laws in other municipalities including Moncton – Halifax – and Quispamsis. Council could give first and second reading to the new By-Law Monday night.
