The Saint John Theatre Company is hoping to move a step closer Monday night to its dream of turning the historic Sydney Street Courthouse into a performing arts centre. The company unveiled its plans last month for restoration which include a significant addition to the rear of the building. That addition will require a site specific amendment to the Heritage Conservation Areas By-Law.

The former courthouse building dates back to the 1820’s and was designated a National Historic Site in 1974.

The Heritage Development Board has given unanimous approval to the project and required By-Law amendment. The proposal has been reviewed by city staff and a staff report to council is recommending approval of the amendment. One email of support has been received from Cynthia and Michael Doyle who are directors of the Sir James Dunn Foundation.

Council can give approval to first and second reading of the By-Law amendment following the public hearing Monday night.
