Common Council has given first and second reading to a traffic by-law amendment that will clear the way for a sidewalk cafe in front of the Art Warehouse on Prince William Street. The by-law change moves a loading zone from in front of the coffee and art shop to an area across the street clearing the way for the sidewalk cafe.

A staff report to Council stated “moving the loading zone would be beneficial and supported by the neighbouring businesses. The loading zone relocation will help assist in the community economic recovery from COVID-19.”

Pubs one block down on Prince William have featured successful sidewalk cafe extensions during the Summer and Fall periods. In a recent interview with newsysj.ca Uptown Saint John Executive Director Nancy Tissington said she expects an increase in the use of outside patios this year.

Third and final reading is expected at the next council meeting.
