Common Council gave third and final reading to changes to the Parking Meter and Traffic By-Law fine structure a couple of weeks ago – but – increased fines contained in those changes have not yet taken effect.
City spokesperson Lisa Caissie says there is work involved to “adjust our system to implement the new fine amount.” The changes see all parking meter tickets and traffic by-law tickets increase by $10 for the initial infraction – an additional $15 if the ticket is unpaid after 16 days – and if the ticket remains unpaid after 30 days an additional $15 will be added.
Caissie says feedback about the fine increases has been minimal and for the most part neutral. She says people understand “that fine and ticket amounts increase over time, and only apply to those in violation of the rules.”
