The New Brunswick healthcare system is beginning to struggle as the second wave of COVID takes hold in the province.

The latest numbers from the Health Department show just over 100-healthcare workers are self-isolating either because of being diagnosed with COVID – or – coming in contact with someone who has the virus. And Chief Medical Officer of Health – Dr Jennifer Russell – says she expects that number to increase in the coming days.

Officials say a number of elective surgeries are being cancelled. They are also watching the impact on specialized health care services. It could reach a point where Intensive Care Units may have beds available – but – not enough workers to provide support to those patients. Health Minister Dorothy Shephard says “right now we are ok.”
