Proposed addition to Sydney Street Courthouse – part of transformation into Performing Arts Centre (Saint John Theatre Company rendering)

Common Council has given first and second readings to a Heritage Conservation Area By-Law amendment that will clear the way for the proposed Sydney Street Courthouse project. The site specific amendment will allow construction of a major addition at the rear of the historic building. The Saint John Theatre Company wants to repurpose the building as a mid-size performing arts centre.

Councillor Gary Sullivan says the addition of the project is creating a strong cultural and theatre district in the uptown. Councillor Greg Norton says the proposal positions Saint John as the cultural capital of New Brunswick.

Third and final reading of the By-Law amendment is scheduled for the March 22nd meeting of Council.
