The City is moving to ban the use of plastic shopping bags. Common Council has given first and second readings to a new By-Law to reduce single use plastic bags.

Council will give third and final reading to the new By-Law Match 22nd. With a few exceptions single use plastic checkout bags will be banned effective July 01st of this year.

The Fundy Region Services Commission says the market for recycled plastic bags has dried up and they are now going into the landfill. The Commission estimates 35 million plastic bags are used in the Fundy region every year.

A communications plan is being worked on to get the message out to the public – retailers – and other local businesses impacted by the change.
