With the focus on the battle against the COVID virus and its variants – it is easy to forget we are coming into what is usually the peak flu season in the province. And there is good news on that front.

The latest stats from Public Health show there has been only on recorded case of flu in the province so far this year and no hospitalizations or deaths so far. How does that compare to previous years? Statistics from the 2019-20 flu season show there just over 2300 lab confirmed cases of influenza last year. Forty-three percent of those admitted to hospital where 65 or older. The report also shows 268 people were admitted to hospital including 43 to intensive care units. The province also reported 14 flu related deaths during the period.

During the 2019-20 flu season there were 72 influenza like illness outbreaks in schools – slightly higher than average – and 9 nursing home outbreaks were reported. Again so far this year – no outbreaks of flu have been reported in schools or nursing homes.
