With the dawning of the New Year you will notice a change in your phone bill whether landline or mobile. The provincial government is increasing the 9-1-1 fee charged from 53-cents a month to 97-cents a month effective today.
The province says the federal Canadian Radio – Television – and Telecommunications Commission has mandated telephone network providers enable new internet based technology by March of this year and text message access to 9-1-1 services be available by March of next year. But – the provincial government says Ottawa isn’t providing any funds to help with the required upgrades.
These upgrades will be part of a planned overhaul of the provincial 9-1-1 system which is nearing capacity.
