Proposed addition to historic Sydney Street courthouse contained in a previous City staff report to Council.

Common Council has third and final reading to a Heritage Conservation By-Law amendment that will allow the Saint John Theatre Company to proceed with its proposal to convert the Sydney Street courthouse into mid-size a performing arts centre.

The Theatre Company unveiled its plans in late January. The addition would be on the backside of the building facing King Street East and include a new entrance and lobby. The plans also include a 220 seat theatre on the second floor – and public access to the 200 year old building’s spiral staircases.

Saint John Theatre Company’s Stephen Tobias says there is still a lot of work to do before a final plan and cost estimates are in place. Tobias estimates construction would take about two years once plans and funding are finalized.
