(UPDATE – The cost of the project is estimated at over $30 million with a two year time frame for construction once all approvals are received and ground is broken.)

Another major residential development is being planned for the city centre. The Landmark is a 9 storey – 180 unit apartment building proposed for a lot at 300 Sydney Street across from Tin Can beach. (Number of storeys corrected after news release was posted.)

The building would include bachelor suites up to 3 bedroom units at “a variety of prices.” The suites are being designed with work from home space in mind and the building would also feature an area for business meetings and entertaining. A spokesperson for the developer says the work from home concept addresses the reality of urban living going forward with more people having the flexibility to work from home. It will also feature a rooftop patio and an electric car share program for residents.

The spokesperson tells newsysj.ca the proposal will be going before Common Council early next month.

In the release posted to the development’s Facebook page – Ali Kamkar – Partner – Landmark Developments says “We are excited to bring this opportunity to add to the character and vibrancy of Uptown with this new apartment complex that will support the increasing population and economic prosperity for Saint John.”

In a Tweet last night – Common Council candidate Brent Harris – who has been an advocate for affordable housing – says he has met with the Landmark team and “I believe they have a strong capacity to develop a mixed income housing unit that will help absorb the growing interest to live near the uptown and the new school. With a lack of new stock in the south end this is good news.”

The proposal now has to move through the city’s planning approval process.
