Mayor Don Darling is resigning from the Police Commission effective immediately. In a blog post – Darling says he no longer wants to be restricted from speaking out about changes to the police service he believes are necessary.
The mayor has been critical about what he terms the lack of transparency and accountability as well as a lack of efforts to deal with systemic racism. Darling also thinks “the relationship between the police union and management needs to be redefined and balanced. It’s broken today, not sustainable financially and actually not conducive to a healthy and thriving workplace.”
Darling says he will use his new found freedom of voice to what he terms necessary reforms with the time remaining in his term of office.
