Welsford Fire crews taking injured hiker down from near summit of Mount Douglas (WVFD photo)

A Sunday afternoon hike up Mount Douglas near Welsford quickly turned to near tragedy when the hiker fell and suffered head injuries. The Welsford Volunteer Fire Department was called in to perform a rescue mission around 4 yesterday afternoon.

One crew made its way up the trail and located the injured hiker near the summit. The hiker was bleeding from the head and also suffered a minor lower body injury. The crew worked to control the bleeding and prepare the hiker for the descent. A second crew arrived with equipment for moving the injured hiker down the mountain to waiting paramedics for transport to the Regional hospital.

The operation took just over two hours with one firefighter suffering minor injuries while transporting the injured hiker down the trail.
