We finally know how much ransom was demanded in last November’s ransom ware attack on City Hall. The attack locked and took down the entire network.

Up until today – city officials declined to say how much ransom was demanded. But – City Manager John Collin told the Council Finance Committee late this afternoon the demand was 670,000 in bitcoin currency – that translated into $17,000,000 based on the exchange rate at the time. As of today – that would have translated into $49,000,000 at today’s exchange rate.

Collin told the Committee he didn’t want to reveal the amount while there was a remote chance the City might have to enter into negotiations with the cyber criminals. That is no longer the case – the entire city network has been rebuilt with enhanced security.
