An outbreak of the COVID South African variant in a Grand Falls special care home has claimed another life. Public Health reports a person in their eighties has died as a result of COVID-19. This brings the COVID death toll to 40 since the beginning of the pandemic in March of last year.

Public Health is also reporting a case of the Brazilian variant has been confirmed in the province for the first time. The Bathurst region case had been previously reported. Cases involving the U-K variant – the South African variant – and the India variant have also been confirmed since earlier this year.

Meantime – 11 new cases have been confirmed today. The total today includes 10 travel related cases of New Brunswick workers isolating outside of the province. Their totals are included in the regions of their home communities. There are 2 cases for the Saint John region with one travel related while the other is under investigation.

There are 7 cases in the Bathurst region and all are travel related. There is one case in the Fredericton River Valley region which is travel related and one case in the Campbellton region which is travel related.

Public Health says 13 people have recovered since yesterday – and – the number of active cases is now 142. Six people are in hospital with 2 in intensive care.
