COVID has claimed another New Brunswicker. Chief Medical Officer of Health – Dr Jennifer Russell – says a person in their seventies in the Edmundston region has passed away in hospital. She says the person was a resident of a Grand Falls nursing home that has dealt with an outbreak of the South African virus. This latest death brings the total number of COVID related deaths to 42.

Public Health is reporting 10 new confirmed cases of COVID in the province today. Nine of the cases are in the Fredericton River Valley region with 5 of the cases contacts of previously confirmed cases – two are travel related – and 2 are under investigation. There is one new case in the Bathurst region and it is related to travel.

Russell says they are watching the Fredericton situation closely especially with some of the 46 active cases related to the highly contagious with symptoms more severe than the original virus. She says Public Health will not hesitate to step up restrictions in the area if need be to control the outbreak.

Public Health also says 6 people are listed as recovered since yesterday and there are now 121 active cases including 20 in the Saint John region. Nine people are in hospital – five of those are hospitalized here in the province with two in intensive care. Four people are in hospital out of province including one in intensive care.
