Proposed bike lanes for Main Street North
(City of Saint John Image)

Common Council is being asked to support conversion of one or two centre vehicle lanes on the Viaduct and Main Street North be converted to bicycle lanes.

The recommendation is contained in a lengthy staff report on the Planned Traffic Safety Improvement Projects for this year. The recommendation hinges on completion of a detailed traffic safety and operational study of the project. The recommendation also asks Council to support Mayor Don Darling sending a letter to the Provincial Transportation Minister “indicating support” support for the bike lanes.

The Viaduct and portions of Main Street are provincially designated highways and changes to traffic flow require support of the Transportation Minister.

The report is on the Agenda for Monday night’s council meeting.
