American Iron & Metal operation on port’s west side.

American Iron and Metal has received clearance to resume its shredding operation on the west side of the port. Provincial Environment Department Communications Officer – Jean Bertin – confirms by email the company was given the “ok” to resume the shredder operation as of this morning “following extensive verification and inspection protocols.”

He says the Department continues to work with the company to ensure compliance with all current conditions of the Certificate of Approval. Bertin also says a department inspector will be monitoring the site “over several days and on a regular basis going forward.”

The shredder operation was halted by Environment Minister Gary Crossman after a series of explosions shook homes and windows on both sides of the harbour late last month.
