A By-Law banning single use plastic shopping bags is effective as of today. The By-Law was drafted and approved by Council earlier this year after a request from the Fundy Regional Services Commission.

The Commission says the market for recycled plastic bags “has evaporated” and the bags are now ending up in the Crane Mountain landfill.

There are some exceptions to the ban which are spelled out in the new By-Law. Most stores are either resorting to either no bag – some type of paper bag – reusable bags – or green container exchanges.

Suburban municipalities have also passed a similar By-Law banning the single use plastic bags.
