Irving Oil is laying off 60-workers at its east end refinery. In a release – the company says the COVID pandemic has had “extreme and serious impacts on our business and our industry.” Demand for motor fuels – jet fuel – and other refined products along with market volatility have created significant challenges. The company says those challenges have forced it to make major changes to its operations. The layoffs represent seven percent of workers at the refinery.
Earlier this year – the company reduced its contractor workforce from 1000 to 225. Other branches of Irving Oil laid off a number of workers last summer.
The company currently has an application before the provincial Energy and Utilities Board seeking an increase in the wholesale margin on gasoline – diesel – and home heating fuels.
