Green Party Leader David Coon is calling on Premier Higgs to step in to save inter-city bus service in the province. Maritime Bus has announced it is cancelling runs between Fredericton and Edmundston – and – Moncton and Campbellton. The company says it will maintain service between Sackville – Moncton – Saint John – and Fredericton as part of agreements with Nova Scotia and PEI to ensure their residents have access to New Brunswick’s regional hospitals and rehabilitation services.
Coon says the move leaves residents in northern parts of the province without the ability to access specialized medical services in southern New Brunswick. He wants the Premier to “negotiate a contribution agreement to keep this lifeline to medical treatment operating.” Coon says without an agreement it means those in the north who can’t drive will have to hitch-hike in order to receive cancer treatment – cardiac care – or specialized rehabilitation services.
