Common Council Chamber

The city is moving forward with establishing a Civic Commemoration Committee to prepare a policy – application – and guidelines addressing public street and place names – street name changes – and commemorations “with the intent to promote inclusion and diversity.”

Council approved the City Manager’s recommendation last night. Included in the approval is meeting with community representatives to a create a process to bestow recognition of Abraham Beverley Walker’s contribution to the city. Walker was the first Black student to enrol at the Saint John Law School – now the faculty of law at the University of New Brunswick – and the first Canadian born Black lawyer in Canada.
