The City has filed a complaint with Saint John Police about vandalism to the Sir Leonard Tilley statue in King’s Square. Vandals used red paint to leave hand prints and slogans on the statue. Steps are being taken to remove the paint as quickly as possible.
The vandalism is the latest in a rash of spray painting and toppling of statues – and – defacing and arson attempts at churches across the country. The outrage and disbelief is building with the discovery of more and more unmarked graves of Indigenous children at former residential schools throughout the nation.
Meantime – the City says it continues to consult with Indigenous in a bid to build “meaningful and authentic collaboration with Indigenous peoples.”
