Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr Jennifer Russell says a person in their sixties has died after developing a blood clot related to the AstraZeneca vaccine. Russell says the person received the vaccine in mid-April and developed the clot a week later. The person went to a hospital emergency department – was admitted – and died two days later in hospital.

Russell says it’s the second case of the vaccine related blood clots and the first death. She says there are two other cases under investigation.

Russell says “there will be rare cases where thrombosis will occur. However, the risks remain minimal compared to the risks, complications and potential consequences of COVID-19.”

Russell says the province will continue to use AstraZeneca for people over 55.
