The first of eight caissons that will form the foundation for the expansion of the west side container terminal has been moved into place. The concrete unit was positioned in the early morning hours today. It will be filled with water and rock to lower it into place on the harbour floor.

Once all caissons are in place – they will sit for a year to allow for settling before work on the actual extension of the pier gets underway. Meantime – work is continuing at the end of the existing pier to prepare it for placement of a caisson.

The 205-million dollar project is expected to be completed within two years and will allow the port to handle bigger ships and more containers.
